In early 2022, I started a podcast channel named “Hello Parents” together with my graduate classmate (and one of my best friends) Kayth.

The idea of launching this podcast came from a deep talk between Kayth and I in May 2021. We discussed about the prevailing challenges younger generations experienced in communicating with their parents. Due to the stark differences in education, social norms, and other external forces different generations receive, intergenerational communication oftentimes ends with quarrels and the cleavages between kids and their parents may not be amended. It reminded me of a phone call I made with my mom a few days prior to the conversation, through which she asked me about the fandom culture in China and the mechanism behind the “trending topic” (热搜) of Weibo. I soon realised that many parents (not only in China but worldwide) are actually curious about the “young world”, while they are circumvented by the information they are able to access. Instead of tagging them with “old-fashion” and “outdated”, we as the “cool” young people should be a guide of the elderly. We thus came up with the idea of talking these issues through podcast.
